Welcome to June, beautiful soul. I am so grateful to have you here.
☀️ Litha: Midsummer & the Peak of the Sun
As the Wheel of the Year turns, we arrive at one of its most luminous points — Litha, the Summer Solstice, falling this year on Sunday 21st June at 9:24am BST. This is the zenith of the solar year: the longest day, the shortest night, and a moment of breathtaking fullness.
In the Celtic and earth-based traditions that have shaped our lands, Litha is known as Midsummer — a time of fire, joy, and the great blossoming of life. The sun stands still for just a heartbeat before beginning its slow, sacred retreat. It is a threshold moment: the year on the cusp of turning, the light at its most generous.
There is something extraordinary about standing in the fullness of this season. The hedgerows are lush, the gardens tumble with roses and honeysuckle, the air itself seems to hum. Nature holds nothing back. And Litha asks us the same: where are you holding back? What part of you is still waiting to bloom?
🔥 The Sacred Fire of Midsummer
Litha has its roots in the ancient fire festivals of Britain and beyond. Communities would gather on hilltops and clifftops to light great bonfires, sending the light of the sun back to the heavens in gratitude. Herbs were thrown into the flames for protection and healing; couples would leap through fire to bless their union; the ash was scattered on fields to ensure a good harvest.
Even in our modern lives, the spirit of this ancient celebration is deeply alive. You don’t need a hilltop or a bonfire to feel it — only a willingness to pause, to lift your face to the sun, and to say: I am here, I am grateful, and I am radiant.
🌿 Litha and Holistic Wellbeing
1. Honour the Light Within
The sun at its peak is a beautiful mirror. Just as it pours light upon everything without reservation, Litha invites us to shine our own light fully — in our relationships, our creativity, our self-expression. This is not the time for hiding or dimming. What gifts are you ready to offer the world?
2. Tend to the Body
As energy peaks in the natural world, you may feel more alive in your body — drawn to movement, warmth, and the outdoors. Walking barefoot on grass, swimming in the sea, or simply sitting in the morning sun for ten minutes can be powerfully grounding and revitalising.
3. Work with Summer’s Abundance
June brings a cornucopia of seasonal nourishment: elderflower, strawberries, peas, courgettes, fresh herbs bursting in the garden. Eating seasonally is one of the most beautiful acts of alignment with the earth’s rhythms. Let your plate be as colourful and abundant as the hedgerow.
✨ Simple Litha Rituals for Modern Life
You don’t need an ancient stone circle to honour the solstice — though if Stonehenge calls to you this year, tens of thousands will gather there at dawn on the 21st. Here are some quieter, tender ways to mark the day:
- Rise early and sit quietly with the dawn light. Simply watch and breathe. Let the sun find you.
- Gather flowers from the garden or hedgerow — roses, elderflower, honeysuckle, lavender — and create a simple altar or vase of summer beauty.
- Light a golden or orange candle at dusk and write down what has blossomed in your life since the beginning of the year. What seeds you planted in January are now in flower?
- Spend time barefoot outdoors, even just in your garden. Feel the warmth of the earth beneath you and the sun on your skin.
- Write a love letter to summer: what do you adore about this season? What does it ask of you?
“Litha is the time of the sun’s fullest gift. May you receive it with open hands and an open heart.”
Love, Janine xx
