Cupping therapy
Cupping has been used in China for thousands of years as a way of alleviating local congestion and stagnation of blood flow.
You could think of it as a ‘reverse’ massage as a vacuum is created in the cup by means of heat and/or suction drawing up the underlying tissue.
The cup is left on the skin for a few minutes, blood stasis is formed and local healing takes place. The cups can then be moved with the suction in place to manipulate the underlying tissue. It is excellent for stubborn or ‘old’ muscular knots and tension and is an extremely effective deep tissue massage therapy as it can affect up to 4 inches of tissue.
Cupping also activates the lymphatic system causing tissues to release toxins, and improve energy levels. It can improve blood circulation, increase metabolism and is very effective when used in conjunction with a detoxification programme.
Although trained in ‘fire cupping’ my preferred method is ‘suction cupping’ for a more targeted and synchronised therapy. This therapy is a combination of suction cupping and Swedish massage techniques targeted at specific areas of concern, usually back, shoulders and legs.
Cupping should be a relatively pain free but it may leave temporary marks or discolouration caused by the vacuum created, they usually completely fade in a few days. But clients considering cupping may want to have the appointment after a special event which involves wearing a backless dress!
